Howdy Folks! Captain Till, here with another fishing report coming to you from beautiful San Juan, Puerto Rico. Come on down, the tarpon are here in great numbers!
The tarpon continue have been very active during the last few days with the average size for summer tarpon in the 15 to 25 pound range, just perfect for 8 and 12 pound test line. These tarpon are hitting bay anchovies, pilchards, threadfin herring and a local bait called machuelo. As usual, Quicksilver Fishing Charters continues to promote the use of circle hooks from various manufacturers because they reduce injuries to fish and reduce subsequent mortality. These hooks are mainly in the 3/0 to 6/0 sizes.
On the fly we continue to have a very respectable 75% success ratio on tarpon, a very good record. The preferred flies at this moment are Olive and White Clouser Minnows, Half and Half’s, Streamers and Wool hair Mullets. Most of the time these are fished on intermediate sinking lines, in which the countdown rate is varied until the tarpon start biting at their preferred depth, this can vary from day to day, but deep and slow retrieving seems to be the most effective way to catch tarpon in Puerto Rico.
Recently, Quicksilver Fishing Charters was features in the Spring Issue of the Big game Fishing Journal and in the March Issue of Saltwater Fly Fishing Magazine, read those articles as you prepare for your adventure in Puerto Rico.
