Master Baiter's Fishing Report July 20 07, Giant Black Marlin Tourn. Won By Captain Steve!

Fishing Report for Week of July 14th, 2007 for Master Baiter’s Sportfishing and Tackle
Written By: Stan Gabruk

I was walking around Marina Vallarta before Daybreak this morning, like I do most mornings while waiting for clients to arrive for a day of fishing and couldn’t help but be excited for the group I had coming. These folks had been fishing with Master Baiter’s of Marina Vallarta before and it was nice to see return customers with familiar faces and smiles, especially since I knew what the day had in store for them!

This week we’ve seen more of the same, but better. The fishing is improving daily here in Puerto Vallarta now with bait plentiful, water temperatures are very favorable and more importantly, Marlin, Yellowfin Tuna and beautiful Mahi Mahi (Dorado) are almost jumping in the boat (almost). So we’ve come into High Season for fishing here in our little corner of Paradise.

This week we’ll start with the inshore action, which is fantastic. A six hour, center console Super Panga will get you into some nice areas in the northern end of the bay to around the corner of Punta Mita. This area, is on fire for Dorado, Bonito, Snappers, Needle fish (I call them Mexican Barracuda), and a host of others. You can literally go out for six hours and come back with 35 nice sized Mahi Mahi (Dorado) and a smile that won’t go away. Super Pangas are always your lowest priced option when it comes to Sportfishing here, but that doesn’t mean low quality. These boats are designed to handle the open waters, they’re safe, reliable and remember the fish don’t care how big the boat is, it’s the bait that grabs their attention (sounds like something I used to tell my ex-wife).

Marrietta Islands and El Morro have been blessed with Snappers, Roosters, Dorado, Bonito, smaller Yellowfin Tuna, Pompano and the list goes on. Action is not a problem right now and this condition should now last into the Winter Season.

Corbetena, what can you say, the Rock has turned into Marlin Central! Big Black Marlin over 700 lbs are becoming more and more common place as you’d expect this time of the year. The Yellowfin have been in the Monster Range, but still a little early to declare Puerto Vallarta as “Cow Country” just yet. But a few Monsters have been boated in the 300 lb range, very encouraging!

El Banco is right there with Corbetena with Marlin, Black, Blue, Striped, they’re all out there and waiting for you to arrive. The bite has been happening later in the morning to late afternoon as you’d expect in a mid month moon phase condition. So you don’t really need to be the first one at the fishing grounds, it won’t give you any advantages for another week or so. The Captains and a few customers know, that when the rains begin, there is more “stuff” in the bay that will ruin a new prop in a heart beat if you hit something. When moving too quickly, you can’t see these obstacles and I’m sure you can see the problem. So leaving at day break is not a bad thing, and I’m sure a little extra sleep is always appreciated, especially after those extra Margaritas from the night before….

Congratulations / Felicidades to Dr. Elmedico of Marina Vallarta along with Capt. Steve Torres and 1st Mate Freddy for winning the 1st international Marlin and Tuna Fishing Tournament out of Paradise Village. Capt. Steve and Freddy have been working with us at Master Baiters from day one and we’ve very happy for the both of them. The winning Marlin was well over 709 lbs and “fat”. This Black Marlin was Stubby and wide for a Black Marlin of this weight. It fought for two and a half hours and was caught on 130 lb. Flouro Carbon leader (a well kept secret). This was the first Marlin caught over 700 pounds in a tournament in the last 12 years! Check out the pictures. Capt. Steve and Freddy are still working with us in the Marina Vallarta Master Baiter’s store so if you’d like to fish like a “champion” just contact me and we’ll set you up.

If you remember from recent articles, the Marina Vallarta Master Baiter’s store is independently sponsoring the Graffiti Clean Up Project in Puerto Vallarta. If you’re a local and live in PV, next time you cross the bridge going into El Centro, notice how the graffiti “eye sor” has been covered by a new coat of paint. When you cruise into El Centro, notice how you don’t “notice” the ugliness an idiot with a spray can created. Then come to the Marina Vallarta Store and say thank you with a donation, time, materials, anything you care to donate. Like my new friend Charlie, an American who vacations here in Puerto Vallarta yearly. He came in and donated $20.00 dollars and thanked us for our work. Thanks Charlie, we appreciate your concern as well as the good people of Puerto Vallarta.

The bottom line here this week is the fishing is coming into the time of year when Puerto Vallarta is the Envy of the world when it comes to Marlin, Yellowfin Tuna (Monsters) Dorado and Sailfish. When the weather heats up, so does the fishing, so don’t delay, make your plans now for August and September dates. They’re filling up quickly and can be a little difficult to get the better quality boats if you wait until you arrive to book your charter, fair warning!

Until next week, don’t forget to kiss your fish!
