Gulf Coast Fly Fishing |
This is what has been going on where I guide north of Tampa Bay on the Nature Coast of Florida. The winds have been very heavy this month. To top that we have had cold fronts broken by a couple of nice days then more wind followed by another cold front. This is winter in central, west coast Florida. The winds don't keep the water mixed up with sand and micro's which the reds don't care for.
We need a few days of calm and warmth to bring the reds back onto the flats. This will happen so stay in touch with me for daily up dates at my website to book a charter. The snook are up the rivers and deep mud creeks. The are worth the hunt as the big boys are sunning and enjoying the warmth of the hot, black mud bottom. Working the fly very slowly is key right now but catching 20 pounders takes some patience. We have to watch the tides very closely or we can get hung out with a long wait.
The reds up river are huge along with the snook and they will be crusing the flats as soon as conditions improve. Stay in touch through my website and be ready to go. When they come onto the flats it's in huge numbers and they want to eat after they warm up in the sun. |
