 At Cedar Creek Bait and Tackle, Tom reports flounder fishing has been good to excellent when the wind and weather allows anglers to get out and hold bottom. Trigger and spadefish are starting to arrive at the reef and wreck sites. Tog reopens July 1st as well as a slot size for stripers. It’s only open for the Delaware Bay and its tributaries with the slot being 20-26”. Shark fishing has also turned on with reports of multiple hook ups. Just remember, most species are catch and release.
On Sunday, the 14th Kollin Brakefield boated a 19” flat W of the Mohawk near F Buoy aboard the Flat Ugly with Capt. Keith Brakefield. The pair reported 8 throwback flats, 2 shark, and 1 skate. Jim Comegys, Brian Haskell, and Evan Haskell fished between F and G Buoy where Evan boated his first flounder, weighing 2.78 lbs. They reported action during an outgoing tide, after tide change, the bite ended. Tom went out on Tuesday and couldn’t feel the bottom with 10 and 12 oz of lead and managed to hook 18 flats, with 3 keepers while fishing in and around Site #6. On Friday, Troy Talley weighed in a 3.62 lb flat that was 22” long while fishing Site #6 with his grandfather, Art Coleman III aboard the Knot Talkin’. Art boated 2 flats. Capt. Duane Bowman, wife Wanda, and daughter Angie fished Site #6 early Saturday morning, before the storm, with Wanda coming ashore with their lone keeper 20” flat. They reported 5 throwbacks, with 2 being real close. Mike Rew, Elijah O’Leary, and Robert Mumford were using only minnows, drifting between Site #6 and Site #7 when Mike boated a 3.47 lb flat that was 22” long and reporting 2 throwbacks. Tim and Brian Coleman reported a small, 8” throwback sea bass from Site #6. Several reports have been received within the last 2 weeks regarding 8-10” sea bass and triggerfish at the Mohawk and Site #6. Brett Ammon rode out the storm and came ashore later in the morning with 1 keeper flat.
Current standings in Tom’s non-profit “Fight a Flounder” for cancer summer-long flounder tournament are: 1st place is Art Coleman III with 6.83 lbs, 2nd place is Robby Grillo with 6.18 lbs, 3rd place is Lester Gassert with 5.97 lbs, 4th place is Troy Talley with 3.62 lbs, 5th place is Paul Troyer with 3.48 lbs, 6th place is Mike Logue with 3.44 lbs, and 6th place is Brett Ammon with 2.42 lbs. The weekly drawing winner was Brian Trumbull. The tournament runs until Sep 22nd with cash awards going to the top 3 finishers and various prizes, too many to list, through 14th place as monthly drawings for the leading fish at the end of Jun, Jul, and Aug .
