Miami Beach Fishing Report - Sailfishing

I would like to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season. This is a great time of the year and I hope everyone gets to enjoy it at its fullest!

Windy weather has become the norm for the past few weeks. Even with the wind, I have been fishing almost everyday. Last week, and early this week, the sailfishing was good. We were averaging 3 to 5 sailfish a day. As this week progressed, the water turned from blue to dirty blue green and the north current died off. With that came a slowdown in the sailfishing. Today was actually the first day in quite a while that we didn’t catch a sailfish, but then again the wind was blowing from the east between 20 - 30 mph.

Besides the rough seas, we had no current and green water. but we toughed it put and caught some decent dolphin. As soon as the current picks back up, the sailfishing should get back on track. By the end of the day, I did notice a slight bit of north current, so we should be back to good sailfishing real soon.

All this east wind has also brought an abundance of dolphin on the edge. Last week we had days that we caught up to 31 dolphin in one day and were consistently catching 10 - 20 dolphin on each trip. Add 3 to 5 sailfish and some kingfish and that is red hot action. The dolphin were decent size schoolies between 5 and 15 pounds. I did hear of some real nice dolphin caught, including a 40 pounder caught on Rudy (Cyberangler’s) boat. The dolphin were on the deeper side of the edge.

The kingfish bite has also been good, especially for the commercial guys fishing the kings in shallower water. The kings I have been catching have been mostly on the small side which is typical for this time of year. I did also hear of a few wahoo caught last week.

We managed to make it out swordfishing one time last week and the weatherman was completely wrong and instead of a calm night, it was a very rough night. Luckily we caught two swordfish that night and by 11:00 pm called it a night. The wind has been blowing for most of the past two weeks, so not many if any boats have been swordfishing.

The forecast for the next week looks good. It is the holiday week and I am now fully booked. I look forward to fishing with some of my regular clients as well as fishing with some new clients.

January is almost completely booked, but there are some open days available. Give me a call and let’s go fishing!

Tight Lines,
Capt. Dean Panos
