Giant Wahoo Drift fishing off Ft. Lauderdale

Giant Wahoo Drift fishing off Ft. Lauderdale

A 79 lb. wahoo on a 20 # test boat rod outfit! Yes, thats the fish of the week for us over here on the Catch My Drift. Caught by a customer that hadn't ever fished a day in his life. It was unbelievable. Our regular customers that fish with us every week were drooling at that fish. What a beauty. We had already had a pretty good day. Earlier, we caught several 15-20 pound kings with some smaller kings and dolphin mixed in. We were on our last drift and had a few extra minutes. We didn't really have time for a whole other drift set up but there were a few minutes left in the trip so Capt. Dale decided to finish the drift and just let the boat drift in shallow. He said there were some muttons caught this week and he was hoping to catch a few of them. Just about when we were calling lines in, zzzzzing...... FISH ON! The guy from Arizona that had never fished a day in his life hooked up to a huge fish. Fish took a couple hundred yard runs, but we got him to the boat. We were thinking maybe a big shark or amberjack. Nobody expected a giant 79 lb. purple sea monster wahoo to pop up. The mates gaffed him with 3 gaffs and heaved him over the side of the gunnel. In 58' of water(wahoos are almost ALWAYS caught in deeper water like 140-1000') we caught the biggest wahoo I've seen all year. Gold, silver and blue stripes with an irridescent purple back on him. We shot about 3 rolls of film at the dock on this fish. It was a great, great day.

Sailfish are still biting good, as are the dolphin, kingfish and wahoo. The big Hammerhead sharks are starting to show up, so I'm excited about that. Shark season is my favorite time of the year. Another fish that really suprised us was a 62 lb. warsaw grouper. Caught him on our favorite ole' 210' wreck we love to fish on. Catching some small amberjacks and some little mutton snappers also. Tonight is the night of the big swordfishing trip, so I hope to have something cool to report about that trip on my next update. Thanks for taking the time to read this and I hope to see ya on the water.
