Mullet run on Miami Beach for Tarpon

I am North Biscayne Bay today with John and Karen Napier from California. The first spot we pulled up to had a couple Tarpon busting Mullet up against the sea wall. I hadn't netted my bait yet so we thru lures at them which they had no interest in. I cast netted some 6 inch mullet and it didn't take long Karen was hooked into a 25 lb Tarpon, these are light tackle fish and very catch able on 12 lb test. We landed it took some photos and got him back on his way. John was next but had a couple missed strikes, finally he had his fish jumping over 8 feet in the air next to the boat. John was really pumped up as I leadered his fish to the boat.



The bite slowed so I ran to Government Cut looking for schools of mullet coming around the tip of the inlet. There were some Tarpon around but no mullet schools, the S.E. wind blows them back to the north for a couple days and it was a little to rough to run down the beach. We did get a bunch of bites from 10- 25 lb Barracudas, the action was fast and exciting but we left looking for more Tarpon.

I ran back north toward Haulover inlet where we found some Tarpon and actually site fished them in shallow clean water. They wouldn't hit the mullet so I used the next best thing a "Twitchin Rap". John and Karen had a great time watching the Tarpon busting Mullet schools and finally hooking several on the "Twitchin Rap" and landing one to end the day. This was a day we worked hard and ended up 3 for 7 on Tarpon, a first for both John and Karen. We all agreed we were tired and called it a day!
