Deep Sea Salt Water Fishing in South Florida Ft.Lauderdale on Happy Day Today/Capt. Zsak

We are at the start of our Mahi Mahi season here in Ft. Lauderdale South Florida. The season started off with a bang – breaking the old Florida State record of 77 lbs for a Mahi Mahi by 12 lbs. This week at Bahia Mar Ft. Lauderdale one of the charter boats came in with an 89 lb bull Mahi Mahi. Mahi Mahi’s are one of the best eating fish around the world – they are also known as Dorado, Dolphinfish and Mai Mai. Besides their great taste, they are also popular mounts due to their beautiful bright blue, green yellow and silver colors. The average sizes we have been catching have been from 5 to 12 lbs. Florida Mahi Mahi Regulations are: 20" minimum to fork of tail, 10 fish per angler and not to exceed 60 per vessel possession limit.

One of the best methods for catching Mahi Mahi’s is deep sea trolling in Ft. Lauderdale South Florida with surface baits of Ballyhoos, Bonita strips, Mullet strips, feathers and live bait. While fishing for Mahi Mahi’s, look for floating debris, such as tree branches, wood, and floating weed lines and patches. Do not be surprise if all of a sudden your Mahi Mahi turns into a Wahoo – Wahoos are noted to congregate in the same deep sea areas as Mahi Mahi’s, which are just as excellent for eating.

Light tackle (20-30 lb test) fishing makes for a more sporting catch in Ft. Lauderdale South Florida. If you see the Mahi Mahi being finicky and not taking your trolling bait, stop and fire out a live bait to him – that usually does the trick.
