Shad and Crappie Derby Kicks Off- Indian River/Mosquito Lagoon Fishing Report

The Report from Spotted Tail 12/18/11

First off, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone! Since next Sunday is Christmas, I just may take a week off in the fishing report arena.

Next, the really big news, the Central Florida Shad and Crappie Derby has kicked off. Charlie Mc Cullough has already caught a shad while fishing in the St. Johns River for crappie. Maybe it will be a good run this year. Anyhow, the derby is fun, lasts three months, offers some nice prizes, and is completely FREE! Click this link for more information.

The fishing report, ah yes. Son Maxx and I went fishing in the dirty water of the Indian River Lagoon on Tuesday. Although he did sight fish a single redfish, Maxx was for the most part blindly tossing a gold spoon. It worked well, as he got seven or eight reds to about 30 inches. I added a couple I got from the poling tower. The weather was gorgeous, the company sublime, and it was a most excellent day all told.

Thursday I went kayak fishing out of River Breeze. I didn't know what I would find since the water level gauge was not working last week. As it turned out the water was too high for successful kayak fly fishing as practiced by me, especially since it was solid overcast for all but about 20 minutes. I paddled six or seven miles, saw maybe 10 redfish, took two casts, and did not get a bite. I had a good time and was glad to get out.

Friday evening John Turcot called and asked if I would take out his charter the next morning. At 8 am I picked up Scott Sinclair, a fly caster from the nation's capitol, from JB's Fish Camp. I then proceeded within 60 seconds to run my boat aground, hard. Great way to start the day. As it turned out it was the most exciting thing that happened.
I looked in most of my favorite places, and places I seldom look. I ran down to Tiger Shoal. We saw maybe 15 redfish and exactly one seatrout all day, and had casts at only a couple fish. What amazed me was that the weather was spectacular. Ordinarily when the weather is that nice at this time of year the fish are going off. We could hardly find any. So Scott, who had never fished for redfish before, got off my boat without having ever caught one, a disappointing outcome for both of us.
At least it was a nice day.

Life is great and I love my work!

Life is short- go fishing!
