August 12 Kona Big Game Fishing Report-HighNoon Fishing Charters

The Blue Marlin fishing in Kona continues to be excellent.....the best in years! Today, Tuesday, Aug. 12, I took Martin Connaught and his son Damon (from Santa Fe, New Mexico), Blue Marlin fishing. We hooked up about noon on a 300 lb Blue Marlin, and Damon did a great job getting the fish to the boat in about an hour. We hooked this fish on a live bait with a circle hook, so this fish put on a great fight. We released this fish to go fight another day.

Yesterday, August 11, I took Steve Ward from Denver, Colorado fishing. Steve and his wife had a condo rented in Kona and wanted to catch something good to eat. We started out on a short Ono run (Wahoo), but didn't get a bite. Then we caught about a 15 lb skipjack tuna which I put out for live bait for a Marlin. That bait was immediately cut in half by a shark. So we caught another two skipjacks about 8 lbs each. We put those out for live bait. The first was killed by an Ono which missed the hook. The second was inhaled by a 225 lb. Blue Marlin...and that one did stick. After a 30 minute fight, we released this fish unharmed. Heading home, I did one more pass on the rocky point in front of the harbor. Got that Ono for the BBQ for Steve and his wife!

And then, the day before that, Mike Mueller and his family from St. Louis, Missouri had a magical day. First, Mike's son hooked into a 250 Blue Marlin trolling lures and this 19 year old young man had the fight of his lifetime. After 30 grueling minutes and some great arial gymnastics, we finally got this fish to the side of the boat and released it unharmed. Mike thought our day was over...sorry, not yet. We caught a live skipjack tuna about ten pounds and put it out for live bait. Wasn't in the water 15 minutes, when another Marlin hooked up. Now Mike himself was in for a great fight, but he also did a great job and we also released this fish weighing about 200 lbs. This last week, we have had Blue Marlin hookups every day and it continues to get better. If you are a Blue Marlin fisherman, hop the first jet to Kona. It is the best Kona Blue Marlin fishing in years!
