August 24, 2008 Kona Hawaii Fishing UPDATE!
The Blue Marlin fishing in Kona continues to be quite good although it has slowed down a bit from earlier this month. Fewer Blue Marlin are being landed but the ones that are landed tend to be larger than normal. Things look great for both September and October as large skipjack tuna schools have just moved into the area....and should bring even more Blue Marlin into the the Kona area.
We have gotten lucky a few times this week. David Kreuiziger from Phoenix, Arizona was the lucky angler earlier this week. He booked a half day charter...and for 3+ hours it looked like it wouldn't be Dave's lucky day. With 30 minutes left in the charter, I made it to the 1000 fathom point just off the harbor and pointed the boat straight toward the harbor. Suddenly a large fish began stalking the stinger lure....and as we watched, it slammed it once and hooked up. After a great 45 minute fight, Dave got the fish to the back of the boat where I was able to release this 400 lb Blue Marlin unharmed. On Monday, Aug. 18, Brian Burton from Austin, Texas got his turn in the fighting chair. After catching about a 10 lb. skipjack tuna, we put it out for live bait. First a giant yellowfin took a good swipe at our bait but missed. Lucky for us. A few minutes later a big Blue Marlin took the skipjack and put up a great fight. Brian got the 450 lb Blue to the boat in about an hour..and then it was released to fight another day. A few days before that, I took Martin Connaught and his son Damon (from Santa Fe, New Mexico), Blue Marlin fishing. We hooked up about noon on a 300 lb Blue Marlin, and Damon did a great job getting the fish to the boat in about an hour. We hooked this fish on a live bait with a circle hook, so this fish put on a great fight. We released this fish to go fight another day.
The past month we have had Blue Marlin hookups almost every day. If you are a Blue Marlin fisherman, Kona is the place to be for the next few months. It is the best Kona Blue Marlin fishing in years!
