Kona Fishing Report-February 12, 2009 |
Overall, this winter has seen the best Kona Marlin fishing in many years. The Kona deep sea fishing continues to be very good for both Blue Marlin and Mahi Mahi. The Spearfish are beginning to bite in greater numbers and that action should continue through May. Striped Marlin have yet to show in any great numbers but that fishing should get better as springtime approaches. During the later part of February, the Wahoo will also begin showing up along the ledges just outside the harbor. Also, the humpback whales have now arrived in good numbers and are seen on most of our charters now. On more than a few occasions lately we have stopped off at Captain Cooks monument while our anglers took a short break and snorkeled in the best water in Hawaii.
On our last trip, we lost a Blue Marlin after a short fight estimated at 500 lbs. We also landed a nice Mahi Mahi for the BBQ. The trip before, we released a White tip shark right after losing a 300 lb. Blue Marlin after a 20 minute fight. On an earlier charter this month, David Puckett from Prineville, Oregon lived his dream fishing day. David had chartered HighNoon for a full day charter and we had 5 screaming Blue Marlin bites while releasing one about 300 lbs after an hour fight on 50 lb stand up gear. We also lost one about 700 lbs earlier in the day. That same day, two Blue Marlin were weighed in by the Kona fishing fleet...one at 914 lbs and the other 702 lbs. The next day, not one blue Marlin made the scales in Kona. Talk about going from red hot to ice cold in one day!
