Kona Fishing Report Update - February 15, 2009 |
The Kona marlin fishing continues to be red hot. Our last four charters have resulted in 4 blue Marlin ranging from 450 lbs to 150 lbs. All fish were released unharmed. On February 23, Glenn and Linda Watson from Furry Creek, British Columbia chartered HighNoon for their second trip. Their first trip was a few years ago and they landed a 150 Blue Marlin and a 50 lb Wahoo. They topped that effort this week with a 300 lb Blue that Linda Watson brought to the boat in about 45 minutes. (See Testimonial page). On one of our charters earlier this month, David and Dawn Nichols from Southern California had booked HighNoon for a full day charter. David said his wife Dawn always outfished him...but this time would be different. About an hour into the charter, one of the rods went off and David gallantly told Dawn that she could fight the fish. About an hour later, we released a nice 350 lb Blue Marlin. We also tagged and released two striped Marlin later on...but the hex continues for David. Dawn has out fished him again!
Valentines Day couldn't have been sweeter for Rich and Arlene Maurer from Newman Lake in Washington State north of Spokane. Rich and Arlene had booked HighNoon on Feb.11 for a 3/4 day Kona Fishing charter. We caught a nice Spearfish that day but they decided to charter HighNoon one more time before leaving for Maui. And it was on February 14, Valentines Day. It was a great decision! We missed a nice Marlin early in the charter and I decided to work that area. About an hour later, we had a great strike on the long corner lure while we were all watching. Rich jumped into the chair while this Blue Marlin put on an exciting top water show. First it charged the boat and I had to power away from this huge fish. Then it decided to take off toward Maui and ran about 750 yards of line out. Rich did a great job of fighting this fish and about an hour later we landed this 497 lb Blue Marlin. Quite the Valentine's present for Rich and Arlene and a Valentines Day they will never forget!
Overall, the Kona Marlin fishing this winter continues to be red hot! This winter has seen the best Kona Marlin fishing in many years. The Kona deep sea fishing continues to be very good for both Blue Marlin, Spearfish and Mahi Mahi. The Spearfish are beginning to bite in greater numbers and that action should continue through May. Striped Marlin have yet to show in any great numbers but that fishing should get better as springtime approaches. The Wahoo have just begun showing up along the ledges just outside the harbor and these great tasting fish are a bonus. In addition, the humpback whales have now arrived in good numbers and are seen on most of our charters now. On more than a few occasions lately we have stopped off at Captain Cooks monument while our anglers took a short break and snorkeled in the best water in Hawaii.
