Kona Hawaii Fishing Report - April 28, 2009

Kona Hawaii Fishing Report - April 28, 2009

The good fishing continues in Kona, Hawaii. Yesterday, April 27, Kurt and Sadie Gutzman from Fairbanks, Alaska got to same the fishing in Kona. We first caught a nice 25 lb Wahoo while slow trolling some plugs on the rocky point just outside the harbor on light tackle. We then changed over for bigger fish and a 30 lb. Mahi Mahi nailed the long corner lure. After a short fight, Sadie brought this fish into the boat and into the cooler. Later it was Kurt's turn in the chair as a 400 lb Blue Marlin grabbed the stinger lure and proceeded to put on the show of the year. For 15 minutes, this Blue put on a spectacular arial display at one point charging the boat while I powered ahead full throttle to pull away from this giant Marlin. Finally, after a 30 minute fight, this fish pulled hook to fight another day.

On April 26. it was Dennis Ruprecht's turn to fight a Kona Blue Marlin. Dennis is from from Minnesota and this was his first experience fishing in Kona. After losing one nice striped Marlin after a short fight, we had two other nice strikes but nothing hooked up. As we turned toward the harbor the short corner lure was inhaled by a 200 lb. Blue. Dennis did a nice job of getting the fish next to the boat...but as we were taking pictures, it went ballistic and began jumping everywhere. We finally got it to the side of the boat and released it to fight another day. The day before, Jeff and Donna Jones from Boulder, Colorado had a stellar day off the Kona Coast of Hawaii. Their three children all caught fish....from a 10 lb tuna to a striped Marlin and a Spearfish. It was a very special day for the entire family......one that they will never forget! Most of my clients this past week have caught some nice fish. While the Blue Marlin fishing has slowed a bit, the Spearfish, Striped Marlin and Wahoo fishing continues to be excellent. As the water continues to warm up, the Blue Marlin and Ahi bite should take off.

Overall, the Kona deep sea fishing during April has been excellent for Blue Marlin, Wahoo, Spearfish and Mahi Mahi. The Kona fishing this entire winter/spring has been excellent for Blue Marlin....the best in years! The Wahoo have finally showed up in good numbers and are providing some good early morning action on the rocky points near shore. Spearfish are also hitting in good numbers along with the marlin. The water temps have warmed up 3 degrees just this past few days and the Kona fishing has improved with the advent of the warmer waters.....and the fishing should just get better with the advent of late spring and summer.

Kona Hawaii fishing charters during the spring usually begins with a quick troll by the rocky point in front of the harbor for Wahoo. We can then switch over for Blue Marlin and other big game fish as we head to one of the FAD bouys or ledges for some skipjack and small yellowfin tuna. We then bridle these up as live bait for Blue Marlin, Ahi and Mahi Mahi. The Spearfish are beginning to bite in greater numbers and that action should continue through May. The Wahoo have just begun showing up along the ledges just outside the harbor and catching these great tasting fish are a bonus. The Wahoo fishing should continue to be very good through July. If we do land one of these great eating fish, I am happy to filet it up for you following the charter. On more than a few occasions lately we have stopped off at Captain Cooks monument while our anglers took a short break and snorkeled in the crystal clear waters of the best snorkeling in Hawaii.
