Kona Hawaii Fishing Report - August 13, 2009 |
One of the things we most enjoy on HighNoon are helping to make peoples wishes come true. We have had two great instances lately that make dreams a reality. On August 11, 14 year old Hayden Okoneski was on a Kona fishing expedition with his father and grandfather. Madrid, his grandfather wanted Hayden to have a chance at a small Blue Marlin. His wish became more than a reality when the long corner lure went off with a huge Blue Marlin. Hayden did a great job of fighting this fish on his own and landing a 584 1/2 lb. Blue Marlin. The day before, Laura Williams booked a 3/4 day charter on HighNoon. Her goal was to have her Mom, Ann Williams catch a Blue Marlin on her 70th birthday. Ann has loved fishing her entire life.....and Laura surprised her with a big game charter for her birthday. Ann just turned a very young 70 today and her dream came true. About 10:30 this morning, our short corner lure was inhaled by a nice Blue Marlin. This fish jumped all over the place for the first few minutes giving Ann and her daughter a great show. Ann got in the fighting chair and did a fantastic job taming this fish in about 30 minutes. It weighed in at 226 lbs and will be birthday thrill of a lifetime for Ann. Earlier this week, Michael Younge from Minnesota got his chance at a Kona Blue Marlin while tagging and releasing two nice billfish. One was a 40 Spearfish and the other about a 180 Pacific Blue Marlin.
The Kona fishing this entire summer has been excellent for Blue Marlin....the best in years! Spearfish are also hitting in good numbers along with the Blue marlin which is a bit unusual for Kona fishing in the summer time. Kona fishing charters during the summer usually begins with a quick troll by the rocky point in front of the harbor for Wahoo. We can then switch over for Blue Marlin and other big game fish as we head to one of the FAD bouys or ledges for some skipjack and small yellowfin tuna. We then bridle these up as live bait for Blue Marlin, Ahi and Mahi Mahi. The Wahoo fishing should continue to be very good through July. If we do land one of these great eating fish, I am happy to filet it up for you following the charter. On more than a few occasions lately we have stopped off at Captain Cooks monument while our anglers took a short break and snorkeled in the crystal clear waters of the best snorkeling in Hawaii.
Note: The February 2009 issue of Marlin Magazine features HighNoon and Captain Dee Bradford in it's main article regarding how lure fishing compares to live bait fishing in Kona Hawaii fishing. It gives 10 reasons why lures are better than live bait....and 8 reasons why they are NOT!
