Kona Fishing Report - June 20, 2010

The Kona deep sea fishing in June/July is mainly for Blue Marlin, Ahi, Spearfish and Wahoo. Late June through August is our prime time for big game fishing in Kona. It is also our tournament season, so if you are looking to fish during this time, I recommend reserving a boat early. The Kona fishing has been picking up lately with good catches being reported of Blue Marlin, Ahi and Wahoo.
June/July is traditionally is a big Blue Marlin month in Kona fishing...and this year has been no exception. It seems like every day one or more big marlin are weighed in or released unharmed. Right now, the Wahoo have showed up in good numbers and providing hot action just outside the Kona Harbor. These speedsters are great to catch and also great on the BBQ. Generally I begin my day going for Wahoo....and once we catch a one or so, we can switch over for bigger fish like a Blue Marlin. As an an owner/operator, I can customize your Kona fishing charter for the type and size of fish you would like to catch. The wonderful fishing conditions define Kona fishing. We fish flat water, close to shore for giant Blue Marlin and Ahi. Fishing in Kona is family friendly and comfortable. It is also the Blue Marlin capital of the world.
Mark and Sharon De Monaco from Sayreville, New Jersey had a full day charter on HighNoon last week. Mark and Sharon have big game fished all over the world, but Kona gave them quite an unusual experience. First, we landed a nice 35 lb Wahoo. Then we caught a 6 lb. skipjack tuna and rigged it up as live bait for a marlin. After a few hours of no luck with the live bait, I switched over to lure fishing. While I was watching the short corner lure, a huge Blue Marlin started folllowing the lure. I shouted to Mark, 'short corner, short corner!~!!". The Marlin grabbed the lure and screamed out about 400 yards of line. After a 10 minute fight, the fish just came off. End of day? Not at all. Just outside the harbor, I dropped down our live bait and it was immediately inhaled by a 200 lb. Sand Bar Shark. After about a 10 minute fight, suddenly the line began screaming off the reel. Mark hung on for dear life as the line just kept peeling off the reel. All of a sudden, the pressure on the reel lightened up, and Mark brought the shark to the boat. We were all shocked to see only the head and shoulders left of the shark. A huge Tiger Shark estimated at over a 1000 lbs had grabbed the shark we were fighting and with one incredible bite, cut that shark in half!!! Check out this photo:
