Lake Conroe January 15, 2007 Report

Fishing Report Lake Conroe January 15, 2007

Weather has been making fishing a very challenging adventure the past week. Rain and cold wind have made the lake difficult at best; however, the tough minded fishermen have been catching some real nice fish.

White Bass and Hybrid/Striped Bass
White Bass and Hybrid/Striped Bass have been pushing the shad up into the shallows on the main lake points almost every evening between 3:30 p.m. and dark. Most are being caught trolling a pet spoon behind a deep diving crankbait or hellbinder. Some are having good luck just using a one oz. barrel weight in front of a swivel with a 30 inch leader trailed behind with a pet spoon.

Catfish
Catfish fishing has been outstanding fishing in 18 to 22 feet of water using stink bait, liver and minnows for bait. Most fishermen are using range cubes for chum and soured deer corn. Larger fish are being caught in shallow water where there is run off from all the rain. The Lake is about a foot over pool and there is lots of water in the grass at the head of the creeks that hold those big catfish.

Bass
Bass fishing has also been very good for those that will get out in the weather. Good solid male fish have been located just off the edge of the grass in 8 to 10 feet of water. Black bass are good on watermelon red and chartreuse spinnerbaits, crank baits, and Rat-L-Traps. There is a bait that looks strange; but, several are using it in the grass. It is the 7/16 oz. Terminator tungsten spinnerbait. It can be used both as a spinner bait or run over the top of the grass like a lunker lure.Check it out at their website: (www.terminatorlures.com.)

Crappie
Crappie fishing has been real slow. There have been some reports catching a few using minnows and blue tube jigs. Minnows seems to still be resulting in the best catches deep on brush piles and around the 1097 Bridge.

Big Cat Rod and Reel Fishing
Rod and reel fishing for big cats has been exceptional and most jug fishermen are also catching nice Blue Catfish in the 25 to 35 pound category. Some even bigger. The larger fish are coming at the headwaters of the creeks where the water is 8 to 10 feet deep and running. Those areas near hydrilla beds seem to have been the most productive. Several large fish have also been caught near drain pipe run-off from the rain. Cut shad, brim (which are hard to find) and chicken liver have proven to be good baits. The guides are requesting that their clients release all fish over 25 lbs. Most of the fish are carrying eggs and these big fish keep our Lake population of catfish one of the best in the country.
