The photo of the week shows my nephew, Robert Gyger assisting our good friend Les Bryant pose his “huge” Kitimat River Chinook Salmon. We don’t know how much it weighed because as soon as we snapped the photo the fish was released. We guess it was well into the 60’s. I can tell you, Les was worn out after fighting this fish. He had one “heck of a struggle” chasing it down-stream in fast water.

Noel Gyger - WEEKLY FISHING REPORT dated February 18 – February 25, 2007
(Number 007)
Dear Fishing Friends:
The weather and fishing has been good all week. The Kalum, lower Copper and Skeena have been fishing well. The water is in good shape. Fishing on the Kitimat River and Douglas Channel has started. Cast below to check out a Kalum River report from angling guide Randy Marshall.
If I can be of service to find you the “best” guided fishing adventure let me know. How about booking the season opener on March 15 for wild Steelhead on the Kalum River with Nicholas Dean Lodge. You’d have to arrive on March 14. If you can’t wait that long how about booking a saltwater trip now out of Prince Rupert or Kitimat for winter Springs, oh, and how about a feed of fresh Dungeness crab…or how about this: Be guided to over 50,000 sq miles of fishing territory for Steelhead starting in March, accessible only by helicopter with Nimmo Bay Resort.
Be sure to check out my website at www.noelgyger.ca for more info on my history, Quality Waters Strategy, special guided fishing trips, video clips, scenic river photos, wildlife photos and others, comments from past guests, informational articles and archived fishing reports from 1996 through 2002. I hope it meets with your entire satisfaction.
CURRENT REPORT and summary:
Access to rivers is getting better as the snow melt has begun.
Type of fish caught: Steelhead, Rainbow Trout, Cutthroat Trout and Dolly Varden and Bull Trout.
Thank you for using barbless hooks.
Fishing this week: POOR____FAIR_ ___GOOD__*__EXCELLENT ___
LARGEST FISH OF THE WEEK: Specie: (estimate) 15-pound wild Steelhead Where: Kalum River Angler: Randy Marshall
Weather...A mix of sun and cloud. Normal Temperatures: High + 5 degrees Celsius. Low - 2 degrees Celsius. Sunrise 7:34 AM Sunset 6:01 PM
Weather reports via telephone…Environment Canada taped messages constantly updated, giving current conditions and three day forecasts. Terrace 250-635-4192 Kitimat 250-632-7864 Prince Rupert 250-627-1155 Smithers 250-847-1958.
Water conditions...good on all rivers, low and clean
Snow conditions…average one foot on the ground and going fast
Skeena River…fishing for early run spring Steelhead has begun.
Kalum River…has an “excellent” run of Steelhead. These fish are wintering over and will spawn in late spring. The water is low and clean. This is a Classified River year round and can be guided from March 15 through October 15 only. The Steelhead record is 32-pounds.
…On Monday, February 19th Randy Marshall went fishing himself on the upper Kalum River for a couple of hours. He started off float fishing and never had a take. He switched to casting a spoon and “bam” the Steelhead were hitting it. He managed to hook six and land three before the run spooked. The theory is, the Steelhead are starting to “key in” on the Salmon minnow hatch. Fly fishing with a silver minnow pattern would be a hoot!
Kitimat River…with the nice sunny winter weather we have been having the last couple of days there have been quite a few anglers fishing the Kitimat for trout. The hottest spot is the big lagoon above the Cable Car launch. Dolly Varden and Cutthroat trout of various sizes have been caught mostly on flys and worms. "The bigger ones are in the main stem river but the river needs to drop and clean up a little more to get the big ones." comments Pat Oliver (a local avid trout fisher). With better weather forecasted, fishing the main river should also pick up. Stay tuned to this fishing report and we will update as the fishery progresses. The fair weather forecast should also be favourable for the saltwater fishers as well. This is happening in our area right now. Wish there was more to report but this is typical for this time of year. Report by Ron Wakita
Kasiks River…fishing for Coho will start again next fall. This is the river where a 27-pound record Coho was landed.
Zymoetz (Copper) River…is closed now for angling (as of December 31, 2006 above the lower canyon) to protect the “wintering over” wild Steelhead. Winter fishing is still available on the lower end below the canyon.
Note: additional rivers will be added “in season” when the fishing begins in the spring.
Ocean fishing Prince Rupert...good fishing for winter springs (Chinook) is now happening in Prince Rupert. Prince Rupert, being a coastal city, is always warmer than Terrace.
Ocean fishing Kitimat Douglas Channel…in the Douglas Channel small groups of herring are starting to show up so fishing for feeder Chinook will also get better.
The herring are starting to migrate up to this end of the Douglas Channel to spawn in the little bays including the two marinas. The feeder Chinook follows the herring and there is opportunity for boaters to catch chrome, plump Chinook. There is also opportunity to catch herring right off the docks. The herring come in small waves to spawn and are gone again. The timing of this fishery will go on sporadically through February and March culminating with one main spawn. The tricky part of this fishery is to have favourable weather be out trolling when the herring are in. Report by Ron Wakita
Area River Records…Chinook Salmon: Skeena River, 92.5-pounds; Kalum River, 85-pounds; Kitimat River, 74-pounds; Steelhead: Skeena River, 45-pounds; Coho Salmon: Skeena River, 27-pounds.
Effective April 1, 2006 to March 31, 2007
Note: For In-season Regulation Changes posted on the web check the above URL’s
Catch & Release formula...Chinook: girth squared x length x 1.54 divided by
1000. Steelhead: Steelhead: girth squared x length x 1.33 divided by 1000 (inches)
