Lake Conditions
March 10, 2007 the Lake is slighly under pool at 200.97 with the water visability less than 12 inches. The surface temperature on the Lake continues to increase with 66 degrees on the main lake and higher surface temperatures in the coves, on the North Shores and along the rocks in the afternoon. The weather could not be better and you need to be fishing. There is still plenty of grass in all the coves and the big bass are moving on the beds.
White Bass and Hybrid/Striped Bass
Several limits of hybrids were reported on Saturday March 10 by guides out of Anchorage Marina. Several of the guides with 4 fishermen brought in 20 Hybrids and released many smaller fish. There were lots of White Bass also mixed in with the Hybrids. Most of the fish are on the main Lake points on both the North and South end of the Lake as the shad continue to move to the shallower water. Both the Hybrids and the White Bass follow the shad. During the mornings and mid-day fishing the Whites remain in 20-25 feet of water and taking live bait and slab spoons worked vertically. Trolling for the Hybrids using small shad colored crank baits and the count-down Rapal's with leadcore line have been the hot tip. Some fishermen have been using a one oz barrel weight above a swivel followed 18 inches to 3 feet by a PetSpoon. Some fishermen are using silver/gold striper jigs
Catfish
Catfish fishing has been great. There have been more and more fishermen reporting good catches under the 1097 Bridge. Larger fish have been caught in 20 - 30 feet of water drift fishing the mail river bed on both North and South ends of the lake. There are plenty of catfish in the creeks where there is timber and baited holes. Several reports from fishermen fishing 8 to 10 feet of water in the backs of creeks and inlets where the water is warmer. Range cubes and chicken scratch are still good chum. Chicken Liver, Catfish Killer Cheese Bait, Magic Bait Company "Premo" and shrimp dipped in Catfish Killer Cheese bait have all produced some nice fish. As the water warms and the shad move into the bulkheads, there will be plenty of catfish along the bulkheads in 3 - 7 feet of water. Keep a close watch on the shad. Brett Radabaugh, CatTails Guide Service caught a 36 lb Blue Catfish on Sunday 03/04/07 drift fishing the river channel.
Black Bass
Tex Bonin out of Anchorage Marina on Lake Conroe, reported the bass are moving on spawning beds in Lewis Creek, Peach Creek, and Caney Creek...Several good catches of bass to 11 pounds during the past week. There are also a lot of fish in the grass just off the beds. As the water warms the rocks around the bridges and bulkheads, good solid fish are being caught in the afternoons using shad colored crank baits, perch colored Rat-L-Traps, and white spinner baits. Once fish are located, the old Texas rigged worm in pumpkin seed, blue/black and purple has been a good bet. Dark soft plastics have proven very successful on the beds; however, there is standing room only in the backs of most creeks. The fish on beds are being worked pretty hard.
Crappie
Crappie were moving to the shallows early in the week and then seemed to vanish. Most Crappie fishermen are having to make the rounds to several of their brush piles in 17 to 22 feet of water only picking up three to five on each brush pile. Some fair catches have been reported under the 1097 Bridge with lights at night and some good catches have also been reported from fishermen fishing in the deep marinas.
