Lake Of The Wood's Fishing Report |
A common way to locate walleye on opening day is ofcourse trolling. I like to use walleye divers, hot & Tots, rapella's. You need to ensure that your lure is running the depth you desire. Troll at the mouth of bays, thru channels and across island points. A color pattern will be determined by day by day trial and error.
Targeting these fish using vertical jigging can be most effective. The fall and winter deep holes 25'-40' are a good bet early in the season and all species can be caught in numbers here.
Fishing the sand beaches & rocky shorelines with jig & minnow in 10- 18 feet of water is effective. When water temps warm walleye will be found in as shallow as 3 feet of water. Trolling with baited spinners can cover a large area and locate fish in this terrain. I like to work over my known areas with jig & minnow. Using your electronics to locate these walleye is a must. While fishing for walleye in this type of terrain, locating independent bolders out 100'or so from shore will quite often yield a good catch of crappie. This is one of the places crappie can be found before they enter the shallow bays to spawn.
Sitting on one spot in the morning hours, in a predetermined channel can yeild an enormus catch of fish. I will sit and not catch for 20 - 40 minutes at a time and than "boom" one after another. (15'-30'). And than they will stop biting for a period and once more pick up again. They are probably passing thru these channels.
Mainly walleye's are caught with these methods but you can hit crappie very well and the odd northern pike.
