Saginaw Bay, Au Gres, 6/18/09 |
The fishing out of Au Gres remains outstanding with limit catches coming on every trip. We had a catch rate on today’s charter that averaged about 10 keepers per hour. Moonshine Walleye Spoons and Hot N’ Tots trolled within 4’ of bottom has been a consistent producer for me. Today’s hot lure was a Moonshine Walleye Spoon pattern called Pink Eye, which is new for 2009. Glow Purple Nose also took a lot of fish today too. Hot N’ Tots have always been a good producer on the Bay. If you can figure out how to get them running close to bottom, they will almost always produce fish anywhere on the Bay. I started out setting lines about two miles straight out from Au Gres (closer to shore than most of the other boats) and trolled south away from the other boats. I usually run out and stop and start fishing when I start marking lots of fish. That’s what I did today. The walleyes are spread out right now all over the place, which makes it nice since you can fish about anywhere away from boat traffic and catch all the fish you want for some high quality, low stress fishing. I like to cover a lot of water at a trolling speed of about 2.0 mph and seek out those pods of larger fish. I typically won’t go over the same spot twice unless I catch some big fish.
