Lake Conditions June 15, 2007. HELLO HOT WEATHER....In the 90’s all week. The Lake is at pool- 201- with the water getting real clear. The surface temperature on main lake is still in the 80’s depending on where you are fishing. All the guides are catching plenty of fish with a early morning leave time from the Marina. Aternoon showers all week. Some very heavy.
Black Bass
Bass fishing much improved this week. Lots of fish taken off of the weed beds and along the hydrilla drop off's. Watermelon red and green and watermelon gold Carolina rigged worms and soft plastics have been the most productive. Jigging in 15 - 22 feet with slab spoons has resulted in some big bass this week. Many were caught while jigging for hybrids around brush. Small crankbaits in green worked around the rocks and boat docks have also produced some real nice fish. With the warmer weather, some bass fishermen are ‘strolling’ a Carolina rigged worm with their trolling motor along the edge of weed beds, over pond dams, off the Tram, off the end of sand bars and road beds. Most of the fish are holding in 18 to 22 feet of water with the warmer weather. Many fishermen are now getting the old Rat-L-Trap out in order to work larger areas. Running a Buzbait over submerged hydrill is also getting some nice fish early and late. The Thursday Night Tournament hosted by Billy Mills & Wayne Whitehead at April Plaza Marina had 36 fish weigh-in this week. ( 06/14/07.) This tournament has been a favorite of many fishermen for over 18 years. $5 is held out from each team entry fee to be used for restocking bass in Lake Conroe. All other money is paid back to the fishermen. Call 936-588-1118 for more info and talk to Billy or Wayne. First Place this week went to the Eddie Moore and Terry Zorn team weighing in 3 fish with a total weight of 17.75 lbs. Big Bass was 8.62 lbs. weighed in by Wess Schubert and Russell Cecil team. A total of 36 fish were weighed in at tournament headquarters.
White Bass and Hybrid/Striped Bass
The hybrids and white bass continue to move with the shad and the shad this week have been in 24 to 26 feet of water. A little unusual for this time of year; but, slab spoons jigged off the bottom where you locate the shad has been the best bet. Road beds off of main lake points and secondary points continue to produce good fish. Most fishermen working the road beds are using slab spoons in chartruse and white to catch both hybrids and whites. White Bass are being caught in the Lewis Lake and Lake Betty humps and dam areas and along the 1097 Bridge. Trolling inline spinner baits behind a JetDiver and PetSpoons has been a good white bass bait and a hybrid hook-up happens every once in awhile. Hybrids also are taking the a Pet Spoon trolled 18 to 25 inches behind a deep diving crank bait. Some EARLY morning schooling of white bass in the shollow flats has been reported. Most throw a Rat-L-Trap or Little George at the schooling fish.
Catfish
Catfish fishing has been great! Baited holes, creek channels, along the river, pond dams and in the flats drift fishing have proven to be good bets for the catfish in 17 - 22 feet of water. There are still lots of fish in the shallows getting ready to spawn. Weeds and rocks near deep water have been the best for the pre-spawn fish. Drift fishing with whole and cut shad and nightcrawlers has been a great way to catch catfish. Many of the guides are using a drift sock to slow the drift and keep the boat straight while drift fishing. The bait of choice for many is Magic Bait “Premo” . This past week, some of the guides were having trouble with customers getting hooked up using shad for bait and went to “Premo” on a number 6 treble hook with a piece of felt and had tremendous success using this bait under a cork in shallow water. First time it had been tried by the guides; but, it was very successful. Liver, shrimp dipped in cheese bait, cheese bait and other stink baits have all been producing fish. The 1097 Bridge has had lots of fishermen and many are catching some real nice fish. Don’t forget to use chum. Range cubes and deer corn make great chum. Several catfish in the 3 to 5 lb size were caught this week trolling Pet Spoons for white bass. Probably not the recommended technique for catfish; but, a catfish or two in the cooler along with the white bass and hybrids make for a great fish fry.
Bream & Crappie
Crappie fishing has finally picked up on the brush piles in 17 -18 feet of water and some real nice slab crappie have been being caught by fishermen working the concrete pilings under the 1097 Bridge using white/chartreuse jigs and minnows for bait. Brush piles in the 17 -18 feet of water have produced some nice fish. The crappie are real sensitive about the depth of water. Bream fishing has been spectacular in most of the marinas, along the rocks at the dam and the 1097 Bridge. Some huge brim are coming from the rocks and under the 1097 Bridge. Fishing in 14 - 16 feet of water off the dam has also produced some nice catches of bream. A real good way to chum for bream is put a couple of hands full of range cubes in a fish basket and tie it off your boat. Let it down 7 or 8 feet and then shake it every once in awhile. The bream will come. You can do this in any of the above areas you fish for bream. Fish under the basket. Nightcrawlers or crickets are always a good bait. Glo Worms are the favorite of some of the guides.
