Columbia river Spring Chinook Fishing |
April is getting closer which means Spring chinook season is about o start. Begginning in March, 269,300 chrome bright springers start entering the Columbia river bound for the Cowlitz, Kalama and Lewis rivers. This will be the third alrgest run since 1977 on the Columbia. April and may is the peak of the run. Most of the "springers" will be 4 year-olds with a few 5 year-olds mixed in. these 4 year olds average 12-22 pounds and are the best eating salmon on the planet.
May is the month for maximum fishing oppurtunity. Spring Chinook fishing is at ts peak with 5-7 "springers" a day. I can't think of anything more exciting than witnessing these fish smack a sardine wrapped Kwikfish, a diver and bait combo while back-trolling, or hover-fishing "cocktail' baits in the deep holes of these rivers.
