The fishing at Au Gres continues to be over-the-top. I ran both morning and afternoon charters yesterday and today and limits came easy on each trip. On average, we took about 10 keepers per hour; however it’s the quality of the fish made those trips unreal. We took a mixture of small, medium and lunker sized fish on all trips. We caught two 10 pounders and many in the 25-29” range. By far, the Moonshine, Glow Purple Nose is the big fish magnet trolled near the bottom behind a Jet Diver at 1.8 to 2.0. I never used crawlers the last two days. I also took a 29 incher on a Hot N’ Tot trolled near bottom too, but the spoons are working better most of the time. I’m still running Tots though because at times we go through a school of fish where they prefer the Tots. Other schools of fish seem to prefer the spoons, so a mixed spread seems to get the most consistent action. The only problem with the fishing here is that my hands are a real cut up mess from handling hundreds of walleyes.
I also want to complement the DNR law Division for taking prompt action to deal with the illegally marked nets that I reported. If you see nets that are illegally marked (Indian or State Licensed), please report them promptly as it is the best way to stop a dangerous situation. Take photos and punch in waypoints on the nets, then call the RAP line (800-292-7800). I have it on my cell phone speed dial for such purposes. I’ve been fishing in deep water the last couple days, so I haven’t seen any nets out past 30’ of water.
