 Just after Christmas the weather turned a little bit colder. Colder enough and faster enough that the water temperature dropped nine degrees. While the water temperature was not in a normally uncomfortable range for the bass it was the quick drop that slowed down the bite. We were able to put bass into the boat. Most of the bass bites were not aggressive. Several of the bass just sort of swam off with the wild shiners. Others would make one wild hit and then disappear not to be seen from again.
This behavior is a little bit like Spawning behavior. It is spawning time and perhaps some of the bass are on the bed at Stick Marsh and Farm 13. And by the same token some of the bass, a bunch, remain in the Pre Spawn mode.
December is over and the cold is gone. The water temperature has adjusted and the bass have adjusted to the water temperature. So…it is time for the Big Ones to get into the boat. It is time for the Big Ones to Spawn. January through the middle of April is the time of the Big Fat Bass. Now is the time. While large bass are catchable all times of year at Stick Marsh and Farm 13 the same bass are not as fat as they are December through mid April.
Weather is always a key factor. Be it cold, warm, dark day, light day, high pressure, low pressure, wind or no wind the weather is a major player that needs to be delt with when bass fishing.
