If you are planning a fishing trip to Maine the first thing you must know is what part of Maine will you be fishing in? Will you be near the coast, will you be inland, far north, etc? Once you know what type of water you will be near, either freshwater or the saltwater you will know what type of Maine fishing guide or charter you need to reserve. Maine fishing trips aren't all created equal and neither are the fishing guides. If you want to fish in the ocean you will need to find a guide that does saltwater fishing charters. If you are in the western part of the state or want to fish in a lake you might be near then you will want to look for a local fishing guide around whatever lake you are near. They will usually fish only freshwater but that includes bass, fly, and other types of lake or stream fishing.

Once you know where and what lake you will be near you can search for a Maine fishing guide which you should do in advance of your trip. Spring and summer can be busy for the area guides and if you don't have a reservation you might not find a reputable guide at all.

Once you find a Maine fishing guide you'd like to hire there are a few questions to ask him. Ask your guide what he provides, most supply everything except for food and drinks. Experienced anglers usually like to bring their own tackle but if you don't have fishing tackle or gear don't worry about it, your guide will supply all the gear. If not find a guide that will, because there are plenty that do, in fact just about all guides supply fishing gear and tackle.
