The annual Hampton Creek Cobia Tournament started in 1995 with a casual conversation between life long friends, Jimmy Rodgers and the late Bernie Gregory. A few ideas sparked what has now become a friendly but competitive day of fishing for many local Hampton Roads sportsmen and women.
This year's event will be graciously hosted by Wallace's Bait and Tackle, Dandy Point, as well as a committee made up of Jimmy Rodgers, Jim Whitson, JoAnn Whitson, Bubba Renn, Deana Renn, and a host of friends and family who help make this weekend a great success. Many thanks to VIMS who will also be present to continue their study of the species.
The weekend will kick off with a mandatory Captain's Meeting at Wallace's beginning at 5:00 p.m. on June 9th. All captains must register boat and crew information and pick up flags that must be flown from the boat during the tournament. The rules will be reviewed to make sure everyone abides by the Cobia Fisherman code of ethics.
Fishing will commence on June 10th with lines in the water at 6:00a.m. and lines out of the water by 4:00 p.m. All fish must be weighed in by 5:00p.m. at Wallace's. Monetary prizes will be awarded for the top three biggest fish and other prizes like fishing rods and tackle boxes, will be given to those who almost caught the big one. 10% of the proceeds from the tournament will be given to the Children's Hospital of the Kings Daughters. Women - take part - we have a special category just for you!
We will round out the event with a family cookout on June 11th starting at 2:00p.m. at Wallace's. Fresh tournament Cobia, cole slaw, baked beans, and rolls are served. It's a great time to hear about the ones that got away!!
